Few Manhattan neighborhoods have retained the grand and luxurious character of a bygone age like Gramercy Park. Lined with fine Greek Revival townhomes and white-glove Gothic co-ops, the area offers an elite, residential feel in the middle of the bustling city. Gramercy Park proper lies between 23rd and 14th streets, flanked by Park Avenue South to the west and First Avenue to the east, while the sprawling communities of Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village extend the neighborhood to the East River.
The two-acre namesake Gramercy Park adds to the area’s exclusive appeal. The only private park in the city, fewer than 400 keys are available to the immaculate haven which forbids dogs, large groups and even commercial photography within its hallowed walls. Those unlucky enough to reside outside key-granting territory are free to relax on the numerous benches surrounding the forbidden oasis, however. Residential options nearest the park lean toward venerable luxury co-ops, condos and historic townhomes.
In Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village, meanwhile, apartment hunters will find 20,000 roomy rental units developed to accommodate post-World War II housing demand. The pet-friendly elevator buildings include utilities, central laundry and other prized amenities in a campus-like environment filled with tree-lined walkways and verdant lawns. While many residents rave about the calm, residential feel Stuy Town and PCV, the 80-acre footprint can make Manhattan living seem far away indeed.
