Spanning from Fifth Avenue to the East River, from 59th Street south to 23rd Street, Midtown East offers some of the most desirable residential neighborhoods in the city. Buildings and developments throughout the district have starred on film and television, while actors and celebrities have called the area home in real life for decades.
In the northeast corner of Midtown East, you’ll find Sutton Place, a tony neighborhood filled with handsome townhouses and plush co-op buildings designed by the likes of Emery Roth and Rosario Candela. Surrounding Sutton Place lies Turtle Bay, a quaint section known for unique developments, such as the ultra-private Turtle Bay Gardens, tony Beekman Place and massive Tudor City. The latter is credited with containing the first residential skyscraper buildings in the city. Further south, Murray Hill is known for the many foreign embassies and consulates that occupy the U.N.-adjacent neighborhood, as well as for its ranks of recent grads and young professionals that seek out the areas slightly cheaper accommodations. Sitting just south of Murray Hill, the Kips Bay neighborhood is filled with medical institutions and large residential complexes, including Waterside Plaza and Kips Bay Towers.
Throughout these Midtown East neighborhoods, you’ll find safe and relatively quiet streets, an abundance of services, myriad dining and nightlife options, and premier luxury retailers. Subway service can be sparse in sections, so potential residents may wish to dust off their MTA bus map.
