The Upper West Side is an eclectic neighborhood anchored at one end by the hallowed halls of academia and at the other by the city’s performing arts capital. Covering the western edge of Manhattan between Central Park and the Hudson River, from 125th Street to 59th Street, the UWS is bordered by two of the city’s best parks and filled with popular shopping, dining and entertainment destinations.
In the northernmost section, Morningside Heights is home to revered academic institutions, including Columbia University and Barnard College, their students and staffs. Further south, Manhattan Valley is a diverse enclave where 19th century institutional buildings stand near the groundbreaking Columbus Square residential and retail hub. At its southern end, known as Lincoln Square, the relatively sedate Upper West Side becomes a lively entertainment and retail district thanks to Lincoln Center and Time Warner Center. On the western border of the neighborhood, Riverside Drive ranks among the city’s most beautiful boulevards thanks to its river views and rows of stately pre-war apartment houses and historic mansions. On the eastern margin, Central Park West is punctuated by dramatic buildings New Yorkers know by name, such as The Dakota, San Remo, Beresford and Eldorado.
From its bucolic northern reaches to its vibrant Midtown-adjacent southern end, the Upper West Side is a haven for both young and old thanks to its desirable mix of quiet, tree-lined neighborhoods, wide-open spaces, coveted conveniences and great accessibility.
